Introduction to VSAM

OVERVIEW

This course provides the basic concepts of VSAM file processing and the facilities, such as IDCAMS and JCL usage, which makes VSAM easier to work with.  This course also will provide an understanding of how VSAM uses objects such as catalogs, control intervals, control areas, indexes, etc.  In addition, participants will practice creating these objects using IDCAMS.

DURATION - 3 Days

OBJECTIVES

  • Define numerous VSAM terms and concepts.
  • Describe how VSAM uses control intervals, control areas and indexes to store and retrieve data.
  • Code all major IDCAMS commands, including DEFINE, DELETE, REPRO, PRINT and LISTCAT.
  • Debug IDCAMS errors and fix common problems.
  • Code JCL and run jobs to create and manipulate standard VSAM objects.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The course is designed for people who create, use or maintain VSAM datasets.  This includes Programmer/Analysts, Operations staff and Technical Support staff.  No previous VSAM knowledge is required.

FORMAT/MATERIALS

This course includes a combination of lecture, discussion and Computer labs.  Students receive an extensive manual containing class notes and numerous examples.  There is an optional textbook available.
